The best way I have found to manage clothes hangers is to use an upper storage cabinet in the laundry room. Remove the shelf (if there is one) and use one or two tension rods (like the ones used for cafe curtains). Place the tension rod(s) inside the cabinet and store your empty hangers on these. If room permits, place one rod below the other and have two levels of storage. I have mine in the cabinet above the dryer. Close the cabinet doors and the hangers are hidden away and accessible. It also provides a place for family members to put their empty hangers. Tubular hangers can be color coordinated for each family member.
One of the petty disagreements hubby and I used to have was over who "hogged" all the best hangers. I finally recycled/freecycled the motley collection of plastic tubular and wire hangers we'd amassed and replaced them with...... his/hers slim flocked ("huggable") hangers. My hangers have black allover flocking, his have platinum gray. Now we don't hoard hangers for our respective closets, and our clothes stay wrinkle free thanks to the slip-proof flocked coating. We have two-year old twins - a boy and a girl - who will soon also have their own similar individual collections of colored, kid-sized Huggable Hangers!
I love the Tubular hangers because they are well made, quite sturdy and come in such wonderful colors. I use a different color to designate types of clothing: my husband has teal for his shirts and polos and black for his pants. I use red for my tees and purple for my Red Hat clothes and pink for my pants. Easy to see where everything goes and brightens my day when I go into the closet! I also recommend the sponge strips to keep blouses from slipping off of hanger.
These hangers have a wide shoulder and are perfect for drip-drying clothing in the laundry room. You can also leave the items on there for use in the closet and then just transition the empty hangers back to the laundry room with your next load of laundry!
